Dutasteride 0.25%
From £64.99
Dutasteride is used for hair loss, in the treatment of male pattern baldness. It helps by blocking androgens (DHT) that cause hair to thin and shorten.
Active Ingredient: Dutasteride
Dosage: 1ml per day
Products will last: 2 months
Dutasteride works for hair loss in a very similar way to finasteride, but it is stronger and more comprehensive at blocking the hormone responsible for male-pattern baldness.
What Causes Hair Loss
Most male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
- Testosterone is converted into DHT by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase
- DHT binds to genetically sensitive hair follicles
- Follicles shrink (miniaturise) → hair becomes thinner → growth eventually stops
How Dutasteride Works
Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, but unlike finasteride, it blocks both forms of the enzyme alpha Reductase
Key Difference between Dutasteride and Finasteride
- Finasteride: blocks Type II only
- Dutasteride: blocks Type I and Type II
Result:
- ~90–95% reduction in DHT
- More complete suppression of DHT in the scalp
This stronger DHT reduction makes dutasteride more effective at stopping hair loss in many men.
Effects on Hair
- Slows or halts further hair loss
- Can thicken miniaturised hairs
- Particularly effective for crown and mid-scalp
- Often used when finasteride is insufficient
It does not revive follicles that are completely dead.
When Results Appear
- 3–4 months: reduced shedding
- 6–9 months: visible thickening
- 12 months: peak results
Consistency is critical.
How It’s Taken
- Typical dose for hair loss (off-label): 0.5 mg once daily
- Available orally and topically
- Dutasteride is officially approved for benign prostatic hyperplasia, not hair loss (hair use is off-label but common)
Side Effects & Safety
Side effects are similar to finasteride but may occur slightly more often due to stronger DHT suppression:
- Reduced libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Ejaculation changes
- Mood changes (rare)
Important difference:
- Dutasteride has a very long half-life (~5 weeks)
- Side effects may take longer to resolve after stopping
Reported side-effect rates remain low (≈2–5%) in studies.
Who Should Consider Dutasteride
✅ Men with aggressive or progressing hair loss
✅ Those who didn’t respond well to finasteride
❌ Those concerned about stronger hormonal suppression
❌ Women (especially pregnancy risk)
Best Results When Combined With
- Minoxidil (topical or oral)
- Microneedling
- Ketoconazole shampoo
