The Science behind Dutasteride 

“Dutasteride is a medication that blocks an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase (5-AR). This enzyme is responsible for the production of the hormone known as DHT which is the androgen hormone that plays a key role in male pattern hair loss.

Dutasteride is often used in situations where hair loss is extensive or not responsive to a another drug known as Finasteride.

Both of these drugs block 5-AR enzyme, however dutasteride inhibits two forms of the enzyme known as isoforms I and II, whereas finasteride only acts on isoform II.

Clinical studies have suggested that Dutasteride can block about 90% of conversion from testosterone into DHT where as Finasteride blocks approx 70%.

Taking dutasteride  both orally and topically works by stopping the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the body so that the DHT doesn’t have the chance to reach the hair follicles.

Further clinical studies have suggested applying the Dutasteride drug topically not only could have a more beneficial effect to the hair follicles but also could have a less severe risk of unwanted side effects systemically.

 

The science behind minoxidil.

Even if minoxidil has been known for over 30 years as “hair growth stimulator” the precise mechanism of its action is not completely elucitated.

Minoxidil shortens telogen, accelerates telogen-exogen phase and causes the premature entry of resting hair follicles into anagen phase.

Moreover, minoxidil increases hair follicle size. A large part of hair treatment scientific literature confirms the efficacy of topically applied minoxidil in humans. In particular, patients treated with minoxidil showed a significant increase in “non vellus” hair count starting from baseline. Preparation of minoxidil requires molecule stability and solubility.

Today are available on the market minoxidil-based formulations having low-concentration of propylene glycol to obtain preparations with a better cosmetical acceptance and dermatological safety.

The body of evidences indicates that minoxidil still represent a milestone in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia and that its story is going on.
